I found this tiny painting in my upturned bike helmet, sometime near dawn, the first time I went to Burning Man. It's 2"x3" and maybe 1/16", much thicker than a business card. There are no marks identifying its maker, but the reverse side has a label: Domestic happiness and faithful friends.
It was the year the streets were planets. My helmet hung from the handlebars of my bumblebee-striped bike. This I'd parked next to my truck, where I was about to sleep, so someone had one night walked through my little camp and left me this delightful little work. It might have been the night of the Burn, but who can say? I think of it as a Gift from the Artist.
